The Artist: Alfred Joseph Casson (1898 – 1992) was born and raised in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario. He apprenticed as a graphic designer with Franklin Carmichael and studied art at Central Technical School. In 1925, he co-founded the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. The following year he was invited to become a member of the already-formed Group of Seven (1920-1932), who helped forge a national identity through the visual arts. Casson specialized in watercolours, and enjoyed painting townscapes. He is buried on the grounds of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, along with five other Group of Seven members.
